Grade 5

If you are a rising 5th grade student, meaning in September 2024 you will start 5th grade, this section is for you.

Students will continue to have access to their online school programs by using their school emails and passwords:

  • IXL- Math
  • Lexia- Phonics/ word study
  • EPIC- Reading
  • Prodigy- Math & ELA
  • Boddle- Math & ELA
  • XTRA Math- Math fact fluency

English

To prepare for 5th grade ELA, students should practice reading fluency by reading for at least 15-20 minutes each day. Here is a list of recommended books, but you can choose any book you would like! Make it a challenge by using this FRCS Summer Reading Bingo Board!

  • Sir Fig Newton and the Science of Persistence by Sonja Thomas
  • The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
  • Rare Birds by Jeff Miller
  • Show Us Who You Are by Elle McNicoll
  • How to Be Brave by Daisy May Johnson
  • The International House of Dereliction by Jacqueline Davies
  • Flora la Fresca and the Art of Friendship by Veronica Chambers
  • Clairboyance by Kristiana Kahakauwila
  • Heroes of the Water Monster by Brian Young

Students should also practice writing skills by understanding topic sentences, body sentences/paragraphs, and closing sentences. Here is a website with some relevant games.

Students should also be reviewing basic grammar skills (parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, verb tenses).

Math

To prepare for 5th grade math, students should be fluent in their math facts for both multiplication and division. I would recommend 30 minutes a week of practice on the online programs.

Students should continue to use IXL to practice operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with whole numbers.  Students should also use IXL to review place value of whole numbers.

Spanish

To prepare for 5th grade Spanish, practice Duolingo 10 minutes every day and make sure you can use the subject pronouns (yo, tú, usted, él, ella, nosotros/as, ustedes, ellos/as). This YouTube video can be helpful.

Science

To prepare for science, students can learn about the scientific method using this worksheet. Print out the first page for your student, and the second page is the answer key.

Here is a great video to discuss scientific investigation further.

Colonial History

To prepare for 5th grade social studies, practice learning the parts of a map: Title, Compass, Legend/Key, and Scale. After watching this video to explain the terms, have your student label different maps from online as practice. Encourage them to make a map of the town they live in or a different community that they are part of!
